“The Kite Runner” Essay #5
By Ryan Ngo
Significance of the title “The Kite Runner”
As the plot comes to an end, Amir could be seen becoming Sohrab’s kite runner. The sport of Kite running is an important symbol in the novel, important enough to characterize the book title. “The Kite Runner” is a title with immense significance because it symbolizes the courage displayed by Hassan and Amir throughout the plot.
“The Kite Runner” title serves an important purpose by which it is a symbol for Hassan and Amir’s bravery. In chapter 7, Hassan’s courage is exemplified by his experience as Amir’s kite runner. We know Hassan is courageous by which he refused to hand over Amir’s kite despite facing the threat of rape by Assef. Given that to be courageous means not being easily deterred by danger or pain, therefore Hassan behavior could be classified as courageous because he did not give in to physical threats and pain. In chapter 25, Amir’s bravery is indirectly illustrated with his kite-running experience. Although Amir did not face any danger or pain while flying Sohrab’s kite in San Francisco, Amir’s courage could be fathomed if we look deeper into the kite-running scene. Before Amir could have to chance to teach Sohrab how to fly Kites, Amir must have devoted his bravery in getting Sohrab out of the clutches of the Taliban. Hence because Amir had to heroically save Sohrab before he has the chance to teach him kite-flying, therefore Amir’s bravery could be evident if we pondered deeply into his role as Sohrab’s Kite Runner. For the fact both Amir and Hassan’s bravery are illustrated in their role as a Kite Runner, therefore one could rationally argue that “the Kite Runner” title is a symbol for bravery.
Because Amir and Hassan were both portrayed as lionhearted individuals under their role as the Kite-Runner, therefore the sport of “Kite-Running” could serve as a legitimate symbol for courage exhibited in the book. Courage is an important theme in the novel, for this divine, holy, and upstanding virtue is displayed by Hassan, Baba, Amir, and many other main characters.
Reflection
Throughout most of the course, I had struggled with the timing of my essays. This weakness in my essay-crafting skill could be attributed to the excess amount of information I include in a single paper. Yet beginning in this task, I became capable of delivering essays quickly. By being selective about the topics presented in my essay, I prevented my essays from encompassing excessive lengths yet at the same ensured the presence of specific details dedicated to interesting subjects. It took me less than an hour to be finished with my masterpiece, which is quick compared to the “2 hour grinds” I took to complete previous mini-essays. And this assignment served as a practice helping me develop my ability to plan my papers and finish them with speed.
